That '200% Bonus' Isn't Free Money: The New Bettor's Guide to Fine Print That Actually Matters

Every new bettor learns the same lesson eventually, and most learn it the expensive way: the bonus was never free.

You've seen the ads. "Deposit $100, get $200!" "Risk-free bet up to $1,000!" The numbers are big, the fonts are bigger, and the asterisks are — you guessed it — microscopic. This guide exists to fix that. By the end, you'll be able to look at any sportsbook promo and figure out its true value in about two minutes.

Rule Number One: Rollover Is Everything

Nearly every bonus comes attached to a rollover (also called a playthrough or wagering requirement). It's the number of times you have to bet the bonus — or sometimes the bonus plus your deposit — before you can withdraw anything.

Example: you claim a $100 bonus with a 5x rollover. That's $500 in total wagers before a withdrawal unlocks. If the fine print says the rollover applies to deposit plus bonus ($200 at 5x), you're now looking at $1,000 in required action.

Here's the kicker: rollovers are designed knowing most bettors won't finish them. The house edge on your required bets chips away at the bonus while you grind toward the finish line. A $100 bonus with a 10x rollover on standard bets can easily be worth $40–$60 in real terms, not $100.

The Minimum Odds Trap

Read the next line of fine print: most rollover bets only count at odds of -200, -150, or even longer. That $500 in required wagers? It has to come at specific price points, which strips you of the ability to just bet your usual style.

Worse, some promos exclude certain bet types entirely — no parlays, no teasers, no cashed-out bets counting toward rollover. If you love building a four-leg cricket accumulator on the weekend, check whether those legs even count. Often they don't.

Free Bets: The Sneaky Two-Step

A "free bet" is usually not cash. It's a voucher. When you win with a free bet, you typically receive only the profit, not the stake. Bet a $50 free bet at +150 and win, and you get $75 — the $50 stake evaporates.

Quick math on what that means: a $50 free bet is worth roughly 60–70% of its face value at best, depending on what odds you play it at. Longer odds maximize the value of the profit-only payout but lower your win probability. Shorter odds are safer but shrink the payout. There's a genuine optimization problem here, and the sportsbook hopes you never bother solving it.

Expiration Dates and Withdrawal Locks

Two more fine-print landmines:

A Real-World Comparison

Say you're choosing between two offers:

Offer A sounds twice as good. But Offer A demands $1,600 in wagers on a ticking clock. Offer B demands $300 in wagers with a month to do it. For a casual bettor, Offer B is almost certainly the better deal despite the smaller number. Bigger is not better. Clearer is better.

The New Bettor's Checklist

Before claiming any promo, ask five questions:

  1. What's the rollover, and does it include my deposit?
  2. What's the minimum odds requirement?
  3. Which bet types count toward it?
  4. How long do I have?
  5. What happens if I withdraw early?

If any answer is buried or vague, treat the bonus as marketing, not money. And if you're a bettor who plays small and infrequently, the honest truth is that most welcome offers aren't built for you at all. A clean, no-strings deposit with your own cash often beats a bloated bonus every time.

Bonuses are fine. Some are genuinely good. But the sportsbook wrote the rules, printed the asterisks, and set the clock. Your job is simply to read all three before the clock starts.
